Border Control / ePassport. Identity technology is crucial to securing border crossings. The ePassport, sometimes called an e-passport or biometric passport, uses contactless smart card and biometric technologies. This aids in document security by increasing counterfeit resistance and user authentication by tying the passport to the individual in a secure, verifiable method. Currently more than 100 countries are issuing ePassports at a rate of 100 million books per year. Security mechanisms such as Basic Access Control (BAC) and Extended Access Control (EAC) work to ensure privacy of the individual's personal information while providing strong security. Also relying on advanced ID technologies are border control documents including the Green Card, visa, Nexus, Sentri, Pass Card and more. February 2010September 2009
