Atmel debuts single-package microcontroller with LF-RFID reader

Atmel Corp. announced availability of an AVR microcontroller (MSU) with an RFID reader block and 16kBytes of in-system self-programmable flash.

The Atmel ATA5505 is one of the industry’s first MCU that features full low-frequency (LF) RFID reader functionality within a single package, unlike others where the MCU and RFID reader are located in two different packages. This translates into customers being able to develop and manufacture small, low-cost reference PCBs for various reader types.

Using the new device also eliminates the need for separate components such as crystals, which are currently required with most 2-chip RFID solutions. The ATA5505 makes is designed to support building a complete reader with just a few required external components and an antenna coil.

Available in a single 5mm x 7mm QFN package and operating in the low-frequency (LF) range at 100-150kHz, the Atmel ATA5505 is suitable for LF Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK) RFID readers and programmers for access control, industrial automation and animal identification applications. [end]

TriggerSmart taps into RFID technology for increased gun safety

TriggerSmart, a startup based out of Ireland, has developed an RFID-based firearm which authenticates its owner before firing, according to SmartPlanet.

An RFID reader is first embedded in the handle of the gun and programmed to recognize a passive RFID tag, carrying a unique ID number that is embedded in either a ring or a bracelet, worn by the gun owner.
