RFID tracks Toronto subway expansion

Monday, October 24, 2011

The National Research Council-Canada Centre for Computer-Assisted Construction Technologies (NRC-CCCT) has launched a joint effort to deploy RFID technology to track pre-cast concrete tunnel liner segments that will be part of a Toronto project expected to be complete in 2012.

According to Journal of Commerce, NRC-CCCT has paired with Woodstock, Ontario based component manufacturer to complete 58,000 tunnel liner segments - each embedded with an RFID tag containing a unique identifier that can be read through concrete - for the York Spadina subway extension project.

The tracking system will work to provide efficiency and increase productivity in the construction that includes two 6.5 kilometers ( roughly 4.04 miles). Field crew members will use mobile computers to update the RFID tags with information about the component’s manufacture, quality control, storage and shipping.

The embedded chips enable maintenance records to be linked to the components which help owners locate damaged pieces of infrastructure systems, such as bridges and tunnels during operation and maintenance.
