Atmel launches XDFN package for small tag applications

Atmel Corp. announced the availability of a small XDFN (Extremely Thin Dual Flat No Leads) package including a 363-bit read/write transponder IDIC. The transponder IDIC ATA5577M1 is a high-volume low-frequency, 100 - 150 kHz RFID designed for small tag applications.

The device operates according to ISO 11784 and ISO 11785 standards, making it well-suited for waste management applications. Together with a robust design also makes the tag suitable for use in harsh environments such as animal ID ear livestock tagging and bolus tags.


The XDFN package measures 2mm x 1.5mm x 0.37mm. The two coil wires can be soldered onto the two pads of the package and mounted or glued onto the antenna coil. The direct mounting and small packaging allows for small end products, such as in standard key fobs or clamshell cards for access control solutions.

An incorporated ATA5577 chip provides a manufacturer-programmed and locked unique ID which enables the traceability of the product to prevent cloning or counterfeiting of the tag IC. The extended read/write distances have been further optimized for access control applications including hotel rooms, offices, time recording systems, and parking lots. [end] 

Atmel Corp. announced availability of an AVR microcontroller (MSU) with an RFID reader block and 16kBytes of in-system self-programmable flash.

The Atmel ATA5505 is one of the industry’s first MCU that features full low-frequency (LF) RFID reader functionality within a single package, unlike others where the MCU and RFID reader are located in two different packages. This translates into customers being able to develop and manufacture small, low-cost reference PCBs for various reader types.
