Bulgaria metal mine installs AeroScout for improved worker safety

Thursday, September 15, 2011

Dundee Precious Metals has installed AeroScout’s Wi-Fi RFID mining solution at its Chelopech Mine in Bulgaria. The AeroScout solution will be used for tracking people, equipment and vehicles to improve worker safety and productivity, both on the surface and underground.

As part of the initial deployment, DPM has deployed more than 1,000 AeroScout tags. The tags are worn by miners or mounted on vehicles and equipment, which transmit vital information over the mine’s standard Wi-Fi network. Information is also sent to AeroScout’s MobileView software, providing DPM with the real-time location of these people and assets.

Previously, the company kept track of workers by noting who had turned in their cap lamps at the end of their shift. Now, this process is automated, allowing staff in the control room to quickly determine the location of miners.

Also in the past, workers driving underground used a radio checkpoint system to relay their location. But now, DPM has visibility into the location of its machinery, which helps the control room more effectively direct traffic, quickly identify problems and better respond in case of emergencies. [end]

Holland 1916 announced its rugged RFID Nameplate Tag designed for automating the inspection and audit processes found in mining, construction, and oil rigs.

Made up of of stainless steel to endure the harshest environments, Holland’s embedded RFID tags are attached to the various location stations of safety equipment. This enables inspectors and auditors to electronically record locations and upload an automated record of time, location, personnel and equipment status to the inspection software using handheld RFID readers.

AeroScout was recently selected to implement and integrate its Wi-Fi RFID-enabled Work-in-Process (WIP) Visibility solution for a Continental Tire factory in France.

Traditionally, manually locating the large carriers used for material transport was challenging and inefficient, resulting in wasted time and materials. With the AeroScout solution, Continental Tire employees can check where a carrier is located in real-time from a Wi-Fi enabled computer.
