Avis deploys wireless rental technology on its auto fleet

Thursday, September 8, 2011

Avis Rent A Car and I.D. Systems have inked a $14 million deal to deploy wireless vehicle rental technology on Avis’ vehicle rental fleet.

The system, Avis On Location, is based on RFID technology to enable virtual rental transactions, and will enable the company to automatically rent vehicles and accept returns at airport locations and corporate campuses.

The initial deployment will put I.D. Systems’ technology into more than 25,000 Avis vehicle rentals and facilities in portions of the United States and Canada. The agreement also provides an option to expand system deployment across its global fleet of vehicles.

The wireless system supports two-way data communications between the vehicle and car rental operating system. This permits business travelers to use their smart phones to reserve, pick up and return rental vehicles and an electronic receipt is automatically issued when the rental is completed. In addition, the system has the potential to automate the vehicle data collection process and streamline billing. [end]
