RFID boosts recycling efforts in Charleston County, SC

Intermec Inc. is helping Charleston County, S.C. boost recycling participation and recycling levels with the use of RFID technology.

In an initial pilot effort, some 5,000 homes have been issue recycling carts with RFID tags which enable the county to accurately measure and identify recycling participating and increase collection operations productivity.


Since installing the Intermec system Charleston County reported improved accuracy within its environmental management program and has increased productivity rates by 83%. The county has also received approval to implement RFID in an additional 5,000 homes after the initial pilot roll out. [end] 

The cities of Cincinnati and Grand Rapids, Mich. have implemented an RFID-based recycling system from the duo of UPM RFID and Cascade Engineering. The two municipalities are using RFID technology to optimize waste management processes and to motivate citizen behavioral change with incentive-based recycling programs and pay-as-you-throw pricing.

Households will each receive a 96-gallon recycle cart fitted with a RFID chip which is read at pick up and recorded on the truck, documenting that recycled material was collected at that address.
