Advanced ID unveils drive over reader for tire asset management

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Using a handheld reader to manually read every tire on an eighteen-wheel truck and trailer assembly - especially the inner tires of a dual wheel setup - can be difficult and labor intensive.

So Advanced ID Corporation designed a drive over RFID reader system for tire asset management in fleet operations such as on trucks and buses. The system employs RFID readers, multiplex units and up to 32 antennas housed in protective casings. The information captured by the reader system is sent to a laptop, server, PDA or other data collection device.

Advanced ID partnered with tire manufacturers to develop the solution and the result is a reader system where trucks can drive over an RFID reader infrastructure at one or two miles an hour and all 18 wheels are read.

Bridgestone Bandag has agreed to help test and optimize the specifications for the system and has also ordered the first system. The company reports that tire manufacturers have indicated that the product will speed up the deployment of factories embedding RFID in the tire manufacturing process. [end]

AeroScout was recently selected to implement and integrate its Wi-Fi RFID-enabled Work-in-Process (WIP) Visibility solution for a Continental Tire factory in France.

Traditionally, manually locating the large carriers used for material transport was challenging and inefficient, resulting in wasted time and materials. With the AeroScout solution, Continental Tire employees can check where a carrier is located in real-time from a Wi-Fi enabled computer.
