GE licenses to Avery Dennison for RF chemical sensing technology

GE ‘s Technology Ventures operation announced its intent provide commercial licensing to the RFID division of Avery Dennison. The partnership will enable a range of wireless sensing products in a series of applications including industrial, food and beverage, packaging and pollution prevention.

The agreement will bring RFID-based wireless sensor technology that can detect and measure chemical, physical and biological conditions in a variety of applications. GE’s radio frequency sensing technology provides a platform for passive, wireless sensing capability. These sensors can detect toxic industrial chemicals, volatile organic compounds, as well as biological agents and physical parameters.


The sensors comprise high frequency RFID tags laminated with unique films, and work in combination with a proprietary reader that interrogates the tag to read both the RFID tag data and the complex RF waveform associated with the chemical, biological or physical measurement.

In the upcoming months, GE and Avery Dennison will collaborate to engage partners and conduct technical field trials of applications for relevant industries such as pharmaceutical, food assurance, and agriculture. [end] 

Avery Dennison Healthcare Provider Solutions and Trimble are working together to deliver ThingMagic powered passive RFID-based systems to hospitals.

As part of the joint effort, Avery will leverage Trimble’s ThingMagic Mercury6 and Astra ultra-high frequency reader platforms to improve key processes for increased patient safety and satisfaction and reduce costs.

The Xtreme Meta tag features Avery Dennison’s AD-843 ultra-high frequency inlay encased in plastic via a custom injection molding process developed by Xtreme RFID.
