Melexis sets to chair DASH7 Automotive Working Group

Thursday, July 29, 2010

Melexis has announced its participation as co-chair of the newly formed Automotive Working Group within the DASH7 Alliance.

The DASH7 Alliance is a non-profit industry consortium that works with organizations around the world to advance and promotes the development and use of the ISO 18000-7 (DASH7) standard for wireless sensor networking.

Operating in the license-free 433 MHz, DASH7 offers multi-kilometer range, multi-year battery life, sensor and security support, and tag-to-tag communications. DASH7 devices operate on a single global frequency and are interoperable out of the box regardless of application and by design do not require application profiles.

“We see a perfect fit between DASH7 features and performance and the requirements of wireless safety applications,” said Gilles Cerede, product line manager for wireless automotive & sensing at Melexis. “For example the ultra low power consumption matches the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) life time constraints, while the multi-kilometer communication range is perfectly suited for car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure applications. Last but not least, DASH7 is compatible from a frequency point of view with existing remote keyless entry systems.” [end]

The DASH7 Alliance launched an initiative to create a standardized interface to communicate with DASH7 devices from any application or cloud computing platform.

The DASH7 Network Access (DNA) initiative will allow software vendors to leverage existing code developed for passive RFID readers and expand their capabilities to include DASH7 events. Access to this service will be available free of charge to developers through an open source license in 2011.
