Apollo Hospital Chennai taps RFID for enhanced patient workflow

Friday, June 11, 2010

The Apollo Hospital Chennai will provide each patient with an Ekahau T301B badge tag that will track their movement within the 30,000 square foot hospital, as well as their current location and time spent there.

Ekahau Inc. teamed with India’s systems integrator ICEGEIN to deploy the Ekahau real time locating system at Apollo Hospital Chennai, which will enable administrators to identify in real-time where wait times are excessive.

ICEGEIN automated the process using Ekahau tags, allowing caregivers to press the buttons once a test is started and immediately after it is completed, allowing for online reports that will help the hospital to track if all the patients have completed the tests they have requested.

The tags also will allow hospital staff to be alerted if a patient leaves the facility before all of his or her procedures are complete. [end]

The Basque National Health System has launched a neonatal security system designed to monitor and protect new-born infants using RFID technology.

When a pregnant woman is admitted to hospital, she is provided a tag with a unique identification which can be read in all the maternity zones. When the baby is born, an RFID tag specially designed for the new born is fitted to its ankle. The device monitors the infant 24 hours a day, detecting unauthorized movements, registering entries and exits to and from and enabling immediate location information.
