NY hospital evaluates RFID-enabled telemonitoring system

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

A clinical study is underway at New York-based Nyack Hospital to evaluate the use of a telemonitoring system, eMedoline, which leverages RFID smart labels to monitor medication adherence in discharged heart failure patients.

Medication packaging equipped with an RFID inlay collect and transmits medication data wirelessly by a patient’s phone in real time, and helps verify patients are taking the right drug at the right time, while monitoring patient report outcomes.

Developed by Leap of Faith Technologies to help patients transition from the inpatient to outpatient setting, the eMedoline system to designed to facilitate compliance data collection and help manage dosing. It integrates the wireless capabilities of RFID and cell phone technology by turning a cell phone into a medication sensor.

All data collected from the phone is sent wirelessly to a secure server where it is available for clinical review and analysis. Alerts can be triggered, enabling intervention in the case of missed medications or adverse events before they become a significant health risk. [end]

Aethon announced recently that it’s automated tracking and chain-of-custody system - MedEx - is now operational at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

The MedEx System serves as enhancement to the TUG robot, also developed by Aethon, and allows hospital pharmacies to know the real-time location and status of medications throughout the facility. Combining passive RFID technology and biometrics capabilities built into the TUG secure carts, MedEx automatically creates an electronic chain-of-custody receipt including the person, location, and date/time indicating when an item is placed in and removed from the TUG.
