Hawaiian reforestation project with RFID at the roots

Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods is implementing an RFID tree-tracking database that will allow investors of a company sponsored Koa reforestation project to track and monitor the progress of their investment in real time.

Each Koa tree planted will be equipped with RFID that will track ownership, growth, maintenance, lumber-yield and pedigree for the tree owner.

HLH will also integrate their own proprietary IT system that will include GPS plantation-wide mapping to enable owners the ability to locate their tress on maps and by satellite imagery, such as Google Earth.

The 2700-acre sustainable forestry project will support the growth of 1.3 million rare tropical hardwood trees, primarily Koa, indigenous only to Hawaii. [end]

Russian government delays universal card project

Russia has pushed back the launch of its universal eID card to January 2013, reports The Moscow Times.

Originally scheduled to roll out this month, the card is supposed to function as an electronic ID, driver’s license, proof of auto insurance, ATM card and immigration document, along with other possible features.
