Axcess Intl improves oil platform safety

Thursday, April 29, 2010

Axcess International has been contracted for a wireless ID system that it says will automate and improve safety on an oil platform in the Far East.

Each worker will wear an RFID-enabled badge, similar in size to traditional ID badges. The only difference being that these wireless badges have embedded transceivers that automatically relay on-the-job status and location.

Using Axcess’ Dot MicroWireless Credential system, the oil platform will have 24/7 monitoring capabilities of its workers.

In the event of a serious injury, commonly called a man-down situation, an alarm is automatically triggered and the given location of the injured worker is provided. [end]

TriggerSmart, a startup based out of Ireland, has developed an RFID-based firearm which authenticates its owner before firing, according to SmartPlanet.

An RFID reader is first embedded in the handle of the gun and programmed to recognize a passive RFID tag, carrying a unique ID number that is embedded in either a ring or a bracelet, worn by the gun owner.
