A clinical study is underway at Rex Cancer Center of Wakefield to evaluate the use of a cell phone based drug monitoring system, leveraging the use of RFID smart labels, according to a DOTmed report.
The system turns a smart phone into a medication sensor, reading data from an RFID smart label on the medication package.
The phone in real time collects information wirelessly and helps verify that patients are taking the right drug at the right time while monitoring any possible side effects.
Data is sent to a secure server where it is available for clinical review and alerts can be triggered, enabling intervention in the case of missed medications.
If patients stop taking their cancer drugs or take less than prescribed, this can also be addressed more quickly, before it becomes a significant health risk.
