Korea uses RFID to trace food, waste disposal

Monday, April 19, 2010

A test is set to occur later this year, in the Yeongdeungpo district of Seoul, Korea to trace food waste disposal through the use of RFID technology, according to a Korea Times report.

Equipped with RFID tags, plastic baskets will be placed at some 8,000 households, before expanding to the remaining 25 districts, to record statistics on the patterns of waste disposal.

Garbage collectors will pick up these baskets, weigh them, and the information will then be sent to a server that accumulates disposal fees. These fees will then be charged monthly alongside electricity, water and other public utility bills.

An exact amount hasn’t been decided on yet, but is expected to be around 30 won (approx. 27 cents) per liter for ordinary households.
