I.D. Systems announced that it has been awarded patents 7,656,271 and 7,656,273 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, covering, respectively, a system for controlling access to mobile assets, and a mobile portal for tracking the movement of luggage.

The mobile portal for tracking luggage describes baggage handling vehicles equipped with both a RFID reader and a device that actuates the reader under certain operating conditions. The system identifies RFID tagged luggage as it is loaded, moved and unloaded – no matter where the vehicles may go.

The system also compares scanned luggage with the flight manifest to match passengers with their luggage, providing a greater security. If a piece of luggage is loaded without being associated with a checked-in passenger the system can automatically send alerts to initiate security measures on the baggage handling vehicles.

OTI granted U.S. patent for contactless 'Smart SIM'

On Track Innovations has received a U.S. patent for adding contactless capability to existing mobile handsets through contactless SIM technology.

U.S. Patent No. 8,090,407, aka “Contactless Smart SIM,” covers the capabilities necessary to turn existing mobile handsets into NFC-enabled devices through the use of a SIM card and a specifically designed antenna, all while keeping the phone and operating system “fully agnostic,” says OTI.

Avery Dennison, Xtreme RFID colabs on RFID tag for metal mount applications

Avery Dennison and Xtreme RFID partnered to develop a new RFID-based tag for mounting on metal surfaces - the Xtreme Metal Tag.

The Xtreme Meta tag features Avery Dennison’s AD-843 ultra-high frequency inlay encased in plastic via a custom injection molding process developed by Xtreme RFID.

IC-TAG receives certification from Alien Technology

IC-TAG Solutions announced it has earned certification from Alien Technology to use its EPC Gen 2 RFID inlays.

IC TAG utilizes Alien Technology’s EPC Gen 2 Squiggle, Squiglette, and Square inlays in their IC-TAG RFID labels and tags. Alien uses its own proprietary microchip, Higgs 3, to produce its ultra-high frequency RFID tracking devices.

Sony awarded patent for biometric game controller

Technology company Sony has been awarded a patent for a game controller designed for use with their Playstation gaming systems that would be capable of measuring a player’s biometrics including heartbeat, perspiration and muscle movements, according to a Thinq article.
