Zebra selected for reducing truck pollution, California

Thursday, February 25, 2010

Zebra Enterprise Solutions announced that the Port of Oakland’s container terminals are using its RFID technology to comply with the port’s ban on polluting trucks.

All trucks passing through the Port of Oakland, delivering cargo must install RFID devices and register them eModal’s TruckerCheck system. The terminals chose to use Zebra’s 24730 ISO-compliant active RFID tags and WherePort proximity exciters to identify trucks entering the terminals.

In addition, three of the eight terminals elected to invest in additional Zebra infrastructure to track the trucks inside the gate and throughout the terminal.

The terminals have banned trucks older than 1994 from picking up or dropping off cargo at the port. Newer model trucks, from 1994 to 2003, must be equipped with filters or have engines that meet equivalent standards.

The RFID TruckTags work at all the container terminals at the Port of Oakland and can be used at the Ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Diego and Seattle, as well. [end]
