Highway uses RFID to reduce carbon emissions
There are approximately 5,000 buses traversing along the Edsa highway, including approximately 1,500 illegal operators - all contributing to traffic congestion and air pollution, reports The Inquirer Network.
In order to comply with environmental protocols set by the United Nations, the Metro Manila Development Authority will install RFID technology to cut carbon emissions, at the same time streamlining traffic flow.
Under the “Bus Reduction Project,” the Development Authority will be able to manage traffic along Edsa by registering public utility buses with an electronic RFID tag, serving as a form of identification.
This will help detect which buses should or should not be allowed on the Edsa, reducing the number of illegal buses that are contributing to air pollution and traffic congestion.
The United Nations’ environmental protocols state that industrialized nations are required to have their greenhouse emissions reduced by five percent by 2012, from the 1992 levels.
