The Philippine’s Supreme Court has ruled in petitioner’s favor, against the continuation of the RFID vehicle tagging project, according to local news reports.
Issuing a status quo ante order, the Supreme Court ordered the Land Transportation Office and Department of Transportation and Communication to discontinue collecting fees for its vehicle identification project, which launched at the beginning of the year.
Supreme Court spokesman, Jose Midas, said the court issued the order based on the arguments in the petition that question the legality of the project. Petitioners stated that the project was never passed through any legal committees for review, and that the project places a burden on the motorists.
Marquez also adds that citizens may seek reimbursement if they already purchased a RFID tag.
The order also states that the Land Transportation Office and Department of Transportation and Communication must respond to the anti-RFID petition within 10 days.
