Land Transportation officials reassure concerned citizens
In response to protest against the Philippines Land Transportation Office’s new RFID vehicle tracking system, chief officials have released their reassurance that the privacy rights of citizens have not been violated.
According to the Manila Bulletin Publishing, the Land Transportation has stated that the RFID system only verifies information of the vehicle identity and data which are already contained in the official receipt and certificate of registration. It does not contain personal information on the owner, as some citizens have implied.
Land Transportation Chief Arturo Lomibao also reassured that the agency’s traffic enforcers were properly trained to handle the electronic tagging of motor vehicles. and that the agency’s project does not pose any threat to individual privacy, as the proper safeguards have been installed to prevent any violation of rights and abuse by enforcers. Lamibao also adds that the RFID tags do not have a Global Positioning System embedded in them. So there should be no concern for tracking location or movement of motor vehicles, much less the people occupying them.
Lomibao state that the system is implemented only to allow law enforcement agencies to access vehicle information to aid in traffic management, law enforcement and crime prevention.
