Datalinx drive RFID onto the track

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

Datalinx has paired with Dunlop Motorosport Europe to develop a new RFID tire tracking system which could be promising in future applications.

The RFID tags are safely embedded into the tire walls during manufacturing, making them tamper proof and protected from the harsh exterior elements that it may encounter while driving on the race track.

The tracking system uses Datalinx’s Drive by Pit Lane RFID reader, which scans a RFID tag already embedded in each of the tires. This information is then relayed to officials, to enable them to track the tire from production, to team allocation, all the way through its return to Dunlop for recycling.

This new system could bring new improvement to the sport, as more development continues. Future applications may include, but no limited to - temperature tracking to prevent blowouts, weight distribution to determine optimal camber, and even a method of determining air pressure.

Datalinx and Dunlop’s system is already in use at the British Touring Car Championship race series.
