Brazilian company, Ceitec, has announced that its RFID devices are the first to be entirely designed in that country.
This accomplishment marks a significant step in expanding the country’s domestic microelectronics industry. Dependence on semiconductor imports is decreased and opportunities become available for some of the country’s top engineers.
In Ceitec’s initial field trials of the Chip de Boi, tags were applied to 500 cows on the Santa Rita Experimental Farm. In all, Ceitec plan to test 10,000 RFID products on other farms in various regions of Brazil.
The chip monitors cattle from birth through slaughter, and includes vaccinations and health records. Unlike conventional methods, it collects data electronically via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or cable. Prior to the Chip de Boi, ranchers had two options which required manual tracking through the use of bar codes and optical earrings. With the electronic gathering of information performed by Ceitec’s new design the potential for human error is removed.
Ceitec is currently working to expand into all areas of livestock tracking and to other industries that require tracking, and plans to produce the chip at its Porto Alegre FAB.
