The utilization of RFID tags looks to increase over the next few years as many industrial organizations find them useful for asset tracking throughout the supply chain.

But what becomes of the tags after they become inoperable, and are no longer needed? How do we dispose of them properly to ensure our landfills are not overwhelmed with an abundant amount of trashed RFID tags?


According DCVelocity, Smartrac is working to respond to this potential hazard by developing a biodegradable and easily recycled transponder with substrates and encapsulation materials.

Current transponders are typically constructed of non-biodegradable ingredients such as polymer substrates, a metal antenna, and a silicon chip which consists of many layers joined together with adhesives.

The manufacturer’s R&D department is working with several technology institutes in Bangkok, Thailand, on the project. Smartrac is also in discussions about green materials with substrate and chemical manufacturers.
