Newport Digital Technologies update on RFID handheld

Monday, December 14, 2009 in News

CNN Money posted an update on Newport Digital Technologies’ anticipated launch of its first RFID ready, handheld computing device. The company announced that by Dec. 14 its military rugged handheld N37B computing device will complete the AT&T device certification and then will be distributed to AT&T’s special vertical markets (SVM) via Ingram Micro, its logistics and distribution partner.

With a release set for January 2010, the two (NPDT and AT&T) have their marketing and business development teams working to identify potential opportunities for the N37B in the supply chain management, retail, military, law enforcement, telecom, industrial process and control and automotive markets.

Newport Digital has been working with the Institute for Information Industry (III) and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to develop a number of RFID technologies, the first being the N37B handheld. NPDT unveiled the N37B at the Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Solutions Association (VICS) conference hosted by the University of Arkansas RFID Research Center.

The N37B, which will run on Microsoft’s CE mobile Computing Platform, features 3G connectivity for data transmissions wherever a cellular connection is available, as well as GPS functionality for pinpointing inventory location.
