RFID smart homes on the horizon

Friday, November 20, 2009

A team of scientists from National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan has proposed a smart home network system that uses RFID technology integrated into the Open Service Gateway Initiative (OSGi) to connect all the user’s media devices and domestic appliances.

This interconnectivity will enable users to remotely monitor their homes from TV monitors or mobile devices, according to dnaindia.com.

The system could help homeowners with pesky problems such as remembering if they left the lights on, or a certain appliance running, or if their children made it home safely from school.

The OSGi comprises more than 70 manufacturers, including Echelon, IBM, Motorola, Nokia, Nortel, Panasonic, Philips, Sony, and Toshiba–any of whom could be on board to support and standardize the proposed system.

The home network would also function as a ubiquitous entertainment system, allowing a user’s music to follow them as they move from room to room.
