New incentive system uses RFID to boost recycling

Thursday, November 12, 2009

RecycleBank has developed a new incentive systems cities can use to boost recycling. The system uses RFID technology to track how many pounds each household recycles, and based on that total offers coupons redeemable at local businesses and restaurants.

RecycleBank installs bar codes or RFID tags on each household’s recycling bin. When it is collected, a scale/RFID reader on the mechanical arm of the waste truck weighs the amount of recycling, records the number, and issues you the appropriate number of RecycleBank Points. Recyclers can keep track of their points totals at RecycleBank’s website.

Currently 75 American cities are participating in the program, with RecycleBank looking to expand into the UK.

The results are impressive. Earlier this summer Westland, Mich. saw a jump from 90 tons of recycling/month to 550 tons/month. North Miami went from a mere 30 tons/month to 170 tons/month.
