Atlanta hospital uses RFID to track cardiology equipment

Monday, November 2, 2009
The Cardiac Program at St. Joseph’s Hospital of Atlanta has chosen to implement WaveMark’s real-time inventory management (RTIM) solution to track over 3,500 products valued at $2 million in its Cardiac Cath and Electrophysiology (EP) labs. WaveMark`s RFID-enabled hospital inventory management solution, WaveMark CIMS, is able to interface with several hospital information systems already in use at St. Joseph’s, and involves using both UHF RFID tags and bar codes to link items to a digital database where they can be tracked and monitored.

St. Joseph’s, Atlanta’s oldest hospital, has already reported success with the RTIM: “I am able to pull a report from WaveMark of products expiring on any given day, in a matter of minutes, and quickly circulate to the labs for all expired products to be removed expeditiously. Normally this would involve a product by product review of every stent and balloon on the shelf,” said Chuck Naylor, Inventory and Finance Manager, Cardiology. “This feature in WaveMark will make what was once a cumbersome, timely process, virtually painless.” [end]

The Basque National Health System has launched a neonatal security system designed to monitor and protect new-born infants using RFID technology.

When a pregnant woman is admitted to hospital, she is provided a tag with a unique identification which can be read in all the maternity zones. When the baby is born, an RFID tag specially designed for the new born is fitted to its ankle. The device monitors the infant 24 hours a day, detecting unauthorized movements, registering entries and exits to and from and enabling immediate location information.
