The BloodCenter of Wisconsin (BCW) has won a $1.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop RFID technology for the automatic identification, tracking, and status monitoring of blood and blood products across the entire transfusion medicine supply chain.
The NIH grant will fund the development and testing of a prototype which will demonstrate the functionality and test the limits of the RFID solution in a realistic environment.
BCW believes that RFID can greatly reduce errors from donor to recipient by ensuring that the right product gets to the right patient at the right time.
Early data from research project has already demonstrated that RFID-enabled processes could provide reductions in morbidity and mortality among hospital-based patients receiving blood transfusions.
