Alabama's largest public library adopts RFID

Monday, October 12, 2009

The Huntsville-Madison County Public Library in Alabama has announced plans to outfit its main library and Madison branch with an RFID system developed by library systems provider Bibliotheca, also based in Huntsville.

The system will include book labels, Biblio Staff Stations, BiblioGate VI security gates and Orion self-check stations to manage the library’s 2.5 million items in circulation, making it the largest circulating library in Alabama.

According to a release by Bibliotheca, the library’s decision to implement RFID is based in large part on a strategic objective to keep pace with the high-tech expectations of the city, which was ranked recently as the No. 1 U.S. city in 2009 by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance.

If all goes well, the library has the option to expand Bibliotheca’s RFID system to its other locations. [end]

Vaughan Public Libraries in Ontario, Ca. are in the final stages of implementing the Fastrac RFID system.

The Fastrac RFID will provide greater convenience to patrons, time savings for the staff and additional security for the library itself. Provided by the partnership between VTLS and mk Sorting Systems, the installation will include several self-checkout kiosks, staff stations, RFID gates, tagging stations, tagging wands and tags.
