The Philippines’ Land Transportation Office (LTO) has mandated that beginning in October of this year all motorists will be required to install RFID tags in their vehicles, according to a report on BusinessWorld.com. The project marks an attempt by the government to crack down on cart theft, unregistered vehicles, and other violations.
The tags, which are meant to go on a vehicle’s windshield, will contain information on both the vehicle and the driver, including engine number, model, year, license plate number, registration data, owner identification, and so on. The information will be read by readers set up throughout road systems nation-wide and relayed back to the LTO for monitoring.
Already there is an outcry among some Philippines claiming that the proposed system will violate motorists’ right to privacy.
There are currently an estimated 5.9 million motorists in the Philippines. The LTO plans to support this system by charging motorists a nominal fee for the tag during registration.
