VeriChip Corporation, a provider of RFID health care systems, announced that it is re-launching its VeriMed Health Link electronic health records (EHR) system. VeriChip hopes to capitalize on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which authorized $23 billion in stimulus funds for health care information technology, with an emphasis on the implementation and adoption of EHRs.

VeriChip’s Health Link EHR system, which was cleared by the FDA in 2004, incorporates implantable RFID microchips (VeriChips), handheld scanners for emergency room personnel and online electronic personal health records. So far the company has enrolled a total of 536 patients in the Health Link EHR system.

The system hit a snag in July 2008 after VeriChip sold a significant portion of its assets to The Stanley Works and diminished its marketing efforts for Health Link, but in November 2008 VeriChip’s former Chairman and CEO, Scott R. Silverman, purchased a majority ownership position and has since pushed for the re-launch of Health Link.

According to VeriChip, EHR systems like Health Link offer a number of advantages over previous record keeping methods, including decreased medical errors and reduced costs for providers and insurers.

iMPak launches NFC-enabled heart monitoring app

iMPak Health has announced the launch of RhythmTrak, an NFC-enabled mobile application that enables users to track their cardiovascular health at home.

RhythmTrak is a handheld, credit card sized electrocardiogram (ECG) device that both documents heart rates and heart rate variability and calculates intervals and single lead waveforms. Data collected on the device is transmitted wirelessly using a NFC reader or an NFC enabled smart phone or tablet, enabling the user to simply forward the information to their physician.

VeriTeQ acquires VeriChip implantable microchip, focuses on patient and animal ID

VeriTeQ announced it has acquired the VeriChip implantable microchip and related technologies and Health Link Web-based personal health record (PHR) from Positive ID. VeriChip is the FDA-cleared RFID implantable microchip for humans and patient identification.

Gemalto unveils health care IT solution

Gemalto announced the launch of ProtivaMedSecure, a solution package that addresses one of challenges facing health care providers: a secure digital identity.

Gemalto’s Protiva MedSecure provides a portfolio of authentication software, digital credentials, secure devices, servers and associated services. The Gemalto solution provides a single credential for secure visual identity, as well as physical and logical access to medical facilities and electronic medical records.

Resolute Health launches smart card for easier patient registration

Resolute Health, based in New Braunfels, Texas, has launched a health security smart card to facilitate patient registration.

Resolute contracted with LifeMed ID to implement the SecureReg Patient Identity Management System. With the Resolute Health BeneFIT smart card, a patient can check into either the Resolute Health Center for Wellbeing or the Resolute Health Family Urgent Care Center and be accurately identified.

Alabama initiative uses RFID to track statewide hygiene compliance

Alabama hospitals and medical centers are taking the initiative to improve health quality compliance in a statewide deployment of Proventix’s RFID-enabled hand hygiene monitoring technology.
