IBM's new middleware gathers data from RFID

IBM has just introduced Websphere Sensor Events, its new middleware designed to gather and interpret data from a variety of networked sensors, including RFID. IBM claims that the new software will grant clients unprecedented visibility over changing market conditions.

Websphere Sensor Events collects data from millions of interconnected sensors in the physical world and runs the data through a company’s business process management system, which can sift through the data and make automated responses according to specially pre-programmed rules and events.


Although IBM intends Websphere for use in the business world, the company says the software could be used for everyday applications, like providing information to consumers about the origin of the foods they purchase.

Fujitsu and Boeing have established an alliance in which the companies will develop a service to enable greater efficiency in aircraft maintenance operations.

The partnership will employ RFID devices and contact memory buttons to enable customers to use these technologies without needing to retrofit their own fleets, thus allowing airlines to reduce costs by eliminating inventory and manual data entry errors without having to create new processes.

Comtech Mobile Datacom has received an order totaling $1.4 million under its movement tracking system contract with the U.S. Army.

The order is in Phase II of an ongoing effort to complete migration of all RFID processes to the new international standard ISO/IEC 18000-7. It encompasses modifications to the platform’s application program, network and other interfaces.
