This week 21 countries including India, Mexico, Spain and Saudi Arabia have started using the UN Universal Postal Union’s new Global Monitoring System (GMS), a program that uses RFID technology to track letters and evaluate the quality of postal service in various countries.

The first phase of the GMS project comprises a trial run from now until December 2009 involving 530 independent panelists from 38 countries. The panelists will send 24,000 RFID-tagged test letters through 45 worldwide postal facilities. Data will be collected as the letters pass through special gates equipped with RFID readers and sent to the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which will then use the data to identify service failures and help postal operators improve operational efficiency.

The UPU has spent the last three years developing the GMS, which is accessible at every Post worldwide, from developing to industrialized countries.

Universal Postal Union to upgrade RFID system with Alien tags

The Universal Postal Union (UPU) has announced that it will upgrade its 21 country quality efficiency program with new RFID tags provided by Alien.

The program involves placement of UHF RFID tags within thousands of test-delivery envelopes which are subsequently circulated throughout various post offices in the 21 participating countries, ranging from Mexico to Malaysia. The tagged envelopes are then read at distinct locations and the efficiency of the postal network is then measured and quantified.

Canadian Retail Solutions (CRS) and YESpay International have partnered to deliver EMV chip and PIN managed card payment service to Canadian customers. YESpay’s EMBOSS is an EMV chip and PIN accredited and PCI-DSS Level 1 certified managed payment service.

Germany taps NXP for national ID smart card chips

NXP Semiconductors announced that its SmartMX secure contactless microcontroller chip has been chosen to power the new German contactless National Identity card.

The German government has selected NXP as the supplier of an inlay solution containing a SmartMX chip, packaged in an ultra-thin module. Issuance of German contactless ID cards, which will replace the current paper-based IDs, will start in November. More than 60 million cards are expected to be rolled out over the next ten years.
