In an effort to encourage the local development of RFID technology, Thailand’s National Telecommunications Commission has funded a pilot project for an RFID-enabled system in the logistics operations of a convenience store chain. The 3.8 million Thai bhat project deployed RFID technology throughout the supply chain of the Sun108 company’s 700 108shops.
The project was funded by the National Telecommunications Commission’s Telecommunications Research and Industrial Development Institute (TRIDI). The TRIDI investment went to the King Mongkut Institute at Lat Krabang University to develop software and systems for the Sun108 company’s internal logistics network. IE Technology provided hardware for the project.
According to a spokesman for the institute, the project focused on two areas. RFID tags and readers were installed throughout Sun108’s warehouses. The RFID system tracked the flow of empty crates as they returned to the warehouse, and provided basic tracking of products loaded into the crates. The system cut the crate loss rate, which had previously been around 25 percent of crates used.
The second area of RFID implementation was the company’s truck fleet. Here, active RFID tags were deployed, along with a global positioning system, with the goal of increasing the trucks’ efficiency.
TRIDI has an 30 million bhat budget for similar RFID pilot projects this year.
