Radio Frequency Identification Technology for Logistics, Tagging and EPC

UPM Raflatac, Impinj, Zebra unite in concept

Tuesday, April 28, 2009 in News

Three major players in the RFID industry, UPM Raflatac, Impinj, and Zebra Technologies, have announced their collaboration on an RFID-enabled product concept. The newly available concept attempts to optimize item-level tagging and validation for process-intensive industries, including electronics and retail manufacturing, health care and pharmaceuticals and third-party logistics.

The collaborative effort offers users the ability to validate the contents of a package prior to shipping and monitor package components even after boxes are sealed. This would combat a lack real-time visibility into manufacturing and packaging processes, which can result in a high rate of process failures, such as an inability to locate required items, incorrectly packed or shipped orders, excessive customer returns, counterfeiting and shrinkage.

The system also enables companies to streamline product recalls and handle them earlier in the distribution process, reducing the high costs of recalls borne by both manufacturers and consumers.

The solution concept combines the expertise areas of the three RFID providers. UPM Raflatac provides its UHF Trap tags, which are equipped with Impinj’s MonzaTM 3 tag chips. Impinj’s Speedway readers and reader antennas are also integrated into the solution, as are Zebra Technologies’ short-pitch RZ400 printers. [end]
