Studies have shown that airports deploying RFID-enabled tracking systems experience a distinct rise in the accuracy and efficiency of baggage tracking, with RFID systems showing average read rates of over 97%, compared to 80% for bar code-only systems. The tags supplied by Motorola for the HKIA system will fit the guidelines of the International Air Transport Association for standard 21 inch baggage tags.

In pursuit of the HKIA contract, Motorola formed a partnership with Avery Dennison RFID, which supplies its AD-833 RFID inlay for the tags, and Print-O-Tape Inc., which provides the baggage tags themselves. The three companies plan to continue working together on initiatives to further develop the market for RFID-enabled baggage tracking systems.
