Motorola wins Hong Kong airport contract

Motorola Inc. has been awarded a multi-year contract to provide the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) with RFID-enabled baggage tracking tags. The contract, good for three years with the possibility of a one-year extension, will result in Motorola supplying as many as 70 million of the tags for the airport’s baggage tracking system.

Studies have shown that airports deploying RFID-enabled tracking systems experience a distinct rise in the accuracy and efficiency of baggage tracking, with RFID systems showing average read rates of over 97%, compared to 80% for bar code-only systems. The tags supplied by Motorola for the HKIA system will fit the guidelines of the International Air Transport Association for standard 21 inch baggage tags.

In pursuit of the HKIA contract, Motorola formed a partnership with Avery Dennison RFID, which supplies its AD-833 RFID inlay for the tags, and Print-O-Tape Inc., which provides the baggage tags themselves. The three companies plan to continue working together on initiatives to further develop the market for RFID-enabled baggage tracking systems. [end]

Motorola approves Salamander software

Salamander Technologies announced that its MOBILE and MOBILE PIV software has been validated by Motorola Solutions.

The Motorola Solutions’ Validated Solution Program includes joint testing at the Motorola Solution Center in Holtsville, New York. MOBILE software provides bar code and smart card reading to identify and track personnel and companies at an incident, emergency or field event.
