Trinidad awards port security contract

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Auto ID solutions provider Axcess International has announced it will provide security infrastructure systems for the port of Trinidad’s capital, Port-of-Spain. The $3.5 million contract covers a comprehensive system will including active RFID devices, sensors and scanners and multiple types of sensors to improve and modernize daily security operations at the port.

Under the contract, specific security solutions provided by Axcess are confidential. Elements of the system, however, will include wireless vehicle and visitor tracking; sensors for toxic chemicals, gases and radiation; and scanning for metal objects on personnel and in baggage.

The new security contract is announced as Trinidad prepares to host hosts the Fifth Summit of the Americas Conference in April. The conference will be attended by more than 30 heads of state from throughout the Caribbean and the Americas. Axcess previously provided similar security solutions for Barbados’ main port when that country hosted the 2007 Cricket World Cup. [end]

GAO RFID has released a Wiegand-to-Ethernet RFID controller designed specifically for door access applications.

The network access controller, model 491018, is able to connect to any type of Wiegand reader such as magnetic stripe reader, RFID reader or fingerprint reader. It also offers a master card for adding or deleting access privileges directly from the external reader, thus acting independently without connection to a network or PC.
