Joining the growing list of casinos around the world which are introducing RFID-enabled solutions to their gaming tables, the Foxwoods Resort Casino has announced it is replacing its old chips with RFID-enhanced ones.

The casino in eastern Connecticut, which is owned by the Mashantucket Pequot tribe, is phasing out 49 different types of chips used at their tables in favor of a unified RFID-enabled solution. The announcement was made to alert any customers holding onto the old, technology-deficient chips that they must cash them in before January 31, 2009. After that, they lose their value.

A spokesperson for the tribe said the switchover to RFID actually began last year, with the opening of the MGM Grand at Foxwoods casino. That casino uses an RFID solution developed by Progressive Gaming International, a provider of diversified products and services used in the gaming industry worldwide, and Gaming Partners International, a casino currency and table game equipment vendor.
