Digital Angel launches cattle tracking system

Tuesday, January 27, 2009 in News

Digital Angel, a provider of a range of animal identification and emergency identification solutions, has introduced a new cattle tracking system. The r.Tag system, marketed by Digital Angel’s Destron Fearing division, offers a flexible format for the automatic collection of livestock identification and data in correlation with specific locations.

The new system consists of r.Tag transponders, which can be read at distances of up to 100 feet, along with r.Tag Position Indicators that enable the system to establish a specific tagged animal’s location within a few feet. The system is wireless, and its scanners are equipped with solar-powered battery back-ups, so there is no need for cables. Integrated anti-collision software enables cattle moving in herds to be identified individually. Eighteen months of field-testing offered proof the system can function in a variety of harsh climates, including the -20 degree Fahrenheit temperatures of a Minnesota winter.

The system was developed by Geissler Technologies, which Digital Angel acquired in January of 2008.

The r.Tag system will be showcased at the 2009 Annual Cattle Industry Convention and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) trade show, scheduled for January 28-31 in Phoenix, AZ. [end]
