RFID-enabled crate packs in awards

Thursday, December 11, 2008 in News

A RFID-enabled crate designed for the Czech baking company PENAM has received several awards for its innovative design. The logistics crate, designed for PENAM in a cooperative effort between tech supplier Barco and plastics producer Alfa Plastik, uses an embedded UHF RFID tag from Alien Technology to enable supply chain tracking solutions.

After receiving a Czech Packaging of the Year award for 2008, given in the category of transportation and handling packaging, the design went on to compete on the international level. The WorldStar for Packaging 2008 competition, organized by World Packaging Organization as a sort of Miss Universe for packaging design, also gave the crate honors.

Additionally, Alfa Plastik won an award for logistics innovation for the PENAM crate, given by a jury of logistics experts at the LOG-IN 2008 forum.

The crate was designed to transport PENAM baking products throughout the supply chain. The embedded tag provides detailed information regarding content of the crate, including the kind of goods contained, the number of pieces, and its intended recipient. The crate and its tag are built to be waterproof and shock and crash resistant. [end]
