RFID enhances Malaysian record management facility

Wednesday, December 10, 2008 in News

An RFID-enabled solution designed by Hewlett Packard and featuring technology provided by UPM Raflatac has been successfully deployed by a large document storage company headquartered in Malaysia. The system uses RFID tags for individual documents to create an efficient inventory and retrieval system for the company, Sure-Reach Records Management Sdn Bhd.

The system uses UPM Raflatac’s FlagTag labels, which are embedded with DogBone UHF RFID tags. The self-adhesive FlagTag is constructed so the embedded tag’s antenna protrudes perpendicularly from the document’s surface. This helps enable a high read rate for the tags, no matter what the material or packaging of the labeled document might be.

The labels are placed on individual documents bound for storage in Sure-Reach’s Shah-Alam storage facility, as well as on the cartons used to store files. The facility has space to store up to 500,000 document boxes, or 1.1 million file folders.

Cartons can be stored on shelves up to three deep without interfering with tag readability. As the system can read batches of tags simultaneously, inventory can be taken by simply passing a reader-equipped cart between rows of shelves. Receiving and dispatching shipments of documents is similarly easy; entire pallets of tagged cartons can be scanned at once as the shipment enters or leaves the facility. [end]
