Mobile Aspects offers RFID solution for endoscope management

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

RFID technology may be coming soon to a colonoscopy near you, thanks to a new solution developed by Pittsburgh-based Mobile Aspects. The company’s new iRIScope is designed to improve the management, utilization and reprocessing of the endoscope equipment used by doctors in a number of non-invasive procedures in fields like gastroenterology.

The new solution addresses two problems encountered by health care providers who have invested in endoscopic equipment. The high-priced equipment is a target for theft when stored in high traffic areas. Also, due to the internal clinic applications of the equipment, stringent protocols are mandated for the disinfection and reprocessing of the equipment. If these protocols are not followed carefully, cross-contamination of equipment and patient infection become serious issues.

The iRIScope uses RFID technology along with work flow automation software to address these issues. The cabinet-based solution secures endoscopes and manages access to the instruments while tracking utilization, repair and compliance with disinfection protocols. Also, to increase patient safety, RFID-enabled devices are used to create an automatic association of individual patients to unique endoscopes and procedures. Finally, the workstations automatically create a paperwork trail during reprocessing of the equipment, to document the sterilization process and help assure that proper protocols are being followed.

Mobile Aspects is unveiling the iRIScope at the Managing Today’s OR Suite conference taking place in Washington, D.C. on October 29-31. [end]
