GlobeRanger, Atos Origin team for Dutch forensics solution

Thursday, October 23, 2008

GlobeRanger, providers of RFID software platforms, and Atos Origin, a management consulting firm, have partnered to provide a real-time RFID tracking solution for the Dutch Forensics Insititute (NFI). The application tracks and traces the exact time, location, and movement of item-level criminal evidence during forensic analysis and processing at NFI.

The RFID system, designed in cooperation with the NFI, the police, and the Netherlands’ Public Prosecution Service, uses GlobeRanger’s iMotion solution to capture time and location data of criminal evidence traveling on trolleys or trays being carried manually by employees. Fifty doors are outfitted with RFID readers and antennas, enabling the NFI to instantly track and log the exact movement of evidence, update a central information system, and make the information immediately available for on-line viewing. The iMotion system identifies any deviations from planned evidence movement processes as violations and triggers an alarm.

The system is a response to government standards requiring all pieces of criminal evidence collected by police at crime scenes, and sent to NFI for forensic analysis to be traceable and identifiable. NFI receives and tags approximately 100,000 pieces of evidence annually, resulting in over 800,000 process events being generated and stored. [end]

The Richardson Police Department in Texas has deployed an RFID asset management system powered by GlobeRanger’s GR AWARE application.

The RPD solution runs on GlobeRanger’s iMotion platform which enables data capture from current and the next generation of devices. This allows the department to electronically scan and catalog inventory, and obtain real-time visibility on critical assets ranging from weapons and uniforms to radars and cell phones.

Mobile forensics and security firm viaForensics has picked apart Google Wallet and found that while generally secure, the app leaves too much information unencrypted.

“While Google Wallet does a decent job securing your full credit cards numbers, the amount of data that Google Wallet stores unencrypted on the device is significant (pretty much everything except the first 12 digits of your credit card),” viaForensics wrote in its report.
