As ports RFID deadline approaches, applications flood in
Authorities at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach plan to go live with their new RFID security systems for trucks accessing the ports on November 1, 2008. As that deadline looms, the number of applications for the Drayage Truck Registry is exceeding expectations.
One of the benefits of the new system is that, since all trucks making frequent or semi-frequent visits to the ports will require an RFID sticker to gain access, a firm figure on the number of those visitors would finally be achieved. Estimates had put the number at around 16,800 trucks. Based on applications so far, the port of Los Angeles has issued 20,000 truck stickers, and the port of Long Beach has issued 30,000, for a total far surpassing the estimate.
Authorities caution that the real number of trucks using the new RFID system, the only way to access the two ports of the nation’s busiest harbor complex, will not be definite until the system is active and concession holders have paid the $100 per truck fee to receive authorization. ![[end]](/resources/bullet/rfidnews-4.gif)
