Motorola announces product enhancements, wider offerings

Monday, September 8, 2008

In an effort to strengthen its position in the worldwide RFID market, Motorola’s Enterprise Mobility division has announced enhancements to its RFID product line along with a wider availability of some of those products.

The company has launched a European version of its MC9090-G RFID Handheld Reader. The new European R1 version of the handheld reader is compliant with current ETSI 302 208 standards required for operation in countries in the European Union. The MC9090-G has long read ranges and integrated RFID reading/writing and bar code scanning which make it suitable for applications including shipping and receiving, item-level in-store inventory management and baggage and cargo tracking.

Motorola has also announced a global firmware upgrade that will offer an low-level reader protocol interface for its XR family of fixed RFID readers. By integrating LLRP, Motorola’s XR family of products can “plug and play” into any pre-existing RFID system. The upgrade will provide extended read/write Gen-2 memory support, enabling XR readers to more efficiently process large amount of tag information, and the reader will now be compliant with the latest ETSI 302 208 standard. The free upgrade should be available for download from Motorola’s website by October.

Finally, Motorola has announced that its RD5000 mobile RFID reader will be certified for use in a total of six new Asian countries - Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, China and Taiwan - by the end of this year. The compact, rugged reader was originally designed for use on forklifts and other vehicles, but can be installed almost anywhere a cabled fixed reader would not be practical. [end]

Texas Instruments (TI) introduced a pair of encapsulated RFID mini-transponders designed for applications in animal tagging and asset tracking.

The 12mm TRPGR30TGC and TRPGP40TGC mini-transponders were developed to enable users a battery-free solution for embedding RFID tags into smaller objects across a broader range of applications. These transponders come ready-to-use and are 100 percent backwards compatible with all of TI’s RFID software and readers including power modules, control modules and micro readers.
