PIPS, 3M offer vehicle registration solution

Thursday, August 28, 2008

PIPS Technology, specialists in automated license plate recognition technology, has teamed with 3M to promote an electronic vehicle recognition (EVR) system in the global transportation market.

The companies’ cooperative EVR solution incorporates 3M’s passive RFID expertise with PIPS’s signature plate recognition technology. The system can automatically identify vehicles and validate their status through data associated through vehicle registration databases and other records.

The EVR system enforces compliance with the vehicle registration process, providing revenue to governments to help improve transportation systems. Enforcing registration compliance through the automated system also enhances public safety and security, increases the accuracy of vehicle registration data and reduces the overall costs of a vehicle registration system, according to the two companies.

One early adopter of the EVR system, the government of Bermuda, was losing nearly $2.5 million dollars in annual revenue due to the vehicle registration scofflaws. According to estimates from Bermuda’s Ministry of Tourism and Transport, the non-compliance rate has been reduced by 50% since the deployment of EVR in the island nation. [end]
