Wisconsin hospital protects infants with RFID

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Waukesha Memorial Hospital, a ProHealth Care facility in eastern Wisconsin, has installed RF Technologies’ Safe Place Pediatric and Infant Security Solution to guard against abductions from its maternity and pediatric wards.

The security solution enables the staff to monitor the whereabouts of their young patients. A lightweight RFID transmitter band is placed on the patient’s wrist or ankle, and receivers are located strategically throughout the hospital. If the band is tampered with, or if the child is too close to a doorway, alarms sound and hospital doors are immediately locked down.

Initial staff training for the system took a week, along with follow-up training and periodic abduction drills. The Waukesha Memorial staff delivers around 2,300 babies a year. [end]

The Basque National Health System has launched a neonatal security system designed to monitor and protect new-born infants using RFID technology.

When a pregnant woman is admitted to hospital, she is provided a tag with a unique identification which can be read in all the maternity zones. When the baby is born, an RFID tag specially designed for the new born is fitted to its ankle. The device monitors the infant 24 hours a day, detecting unauthorized movements, registering entries and exits to and from and enabling immediate location information.
