Online calculator promotes RFID-enabled plastic pallets

Wednesday, July 30, 2008

Intelligent Global Pooling Systems (iGPS) has created a new interactive tool to promote its pool of all-plastic pallets with embedded RFID tags. The new calculator, on iGPS’s Web site, enables companies to predict the reduction in fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions resulting from a switch to all-plastic pallets from typical multi-use wood pallets.

The calculator uses data issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency quantifying relationships between cargo weight, fuel usage and greenhouse gas emissions. Users input the number of truckloads they ship annually, along with the average number of pallets per truckload. The calculator uses the EPA data to determine the total annual reduction in weight achieved by using the lighter plastic pallets, the fuel savings that would result, and the associated greenhouse gas emissions that would be avoided.

While the iGPS calculator focuses on the environmental benefits associated with the plastic pallet’s lighter weight, the change in materials also reduces deforestation. The company reports that nearly 40% of all hard wood harvested in the US is used for wood pallets.

The iGPS all-plastic RFID-enabled pallet meets all GMA requirements, weighs 30% less than typical multi-use wood pallets, is UL 2335 certified fire-retardant, and is also 100% recyclable.
