The Florida State Attorney’s office for the state’s 15th Judicial Circuit processes tens of thousands of case files every year, filling its three-story building with a mountain of paperwork. To bring order to the potential chaos of documents, the office has added RFID capability to its proprietary case-tracking system.
Now, to locate a file, an attorney simply enters a case number into a software application, types in a command, and the system displays the location of the requested file on a building floor plan. The office’s chief information officer says the new system is saving the office time, money and unnecessary court issues caused by unavailable documents.
The state attorney office began looking at RFID solutions to its filing problems as early as 2003, but at the time the technology was cost-prohibitive. A three-year wait made the system more affordable, and also brought innovations that made it a better fit for the attorney office’s needs.
RFID system provider InnerWireless was able to create the tracking solution for around $100,000. The RFID labels used on files cost less than 25 cents each. The cost of the system is covered by a two dollar assessment levied on clerk office filings.
